Tirupati holds a special significance for Hindu pilgrims as it is home to one of their holiest shrines, Sri Venkateswara Swamy Temple – commonly known as Tirupati Balaji. Other religious places to visit in Tirupati are Sri Govindaraja Swamy Temple, Sri Kapliswaraswamy Temple, Srivari Padala Mandapam, Sri Padmavathi Ammavari Temple and Srikalahasti Temple.
There are many other things to do for tourists in this holy town such as exploring the flora and fauna at Deer Park, Sri Venkateswara National Park and TTD Gardens. Nature lovers can admire the scenic beauty at Talakona Waterfalls, Akasaganga Theertham and Papavinasanam Dam while historians will love visiting Silathoranam, Srivari Museum and Chandragiri.
While in Tirupati, tourists must explore local shopping centres such as Bazaar Street in Chandragiri to buy devotional CDs and books, thanjavur and kalamkari paintings, wooden toys and other gift items. Food options might be limited to vegetarian but regional dishes like sweet rice, rava khichdi, masala paal, payassam, sheermal, and mango lassi are just worth it.
Owing to its proximity to major cities like Bangalore and Chennai, Tirupati makes a perfect weekend getaway for religious travellers. But even those bitten by the travel bug can come here and proceed to Pondicherry or hill stations like Nandi Hills located nearby.
