Chennai Metro Interesting Facts
- The construction of Chennai Metro began in 2009, and the first section of the metro system, the Blue Line, was inaugurated on June 29, 2015. The initial phase of the project was developed to connect key areas within the city.
- It is the 4th longest metro system in India covering a length of 54 kilometres.
- The system has no at-grade tracks, and trains either run on elevated viaducts or underground.
- Chennai Metro uses 1,435 mm (standard gauge) tracks and overhead catenary carrying an alternating current of 25 kilovolts.
Chennai Metro Lines
Currently, only two Chennai Metro lines, i.e. the Blue Line and Green Line are operational. The Purple Line, Red Line, and Orange Line are under construction. These upcoming lines will be partly elevated and partly underground.
